Our real estate practice group works with clients of all sizes and varieties in connection with the acquisition and disposition of real estate assets, not only by means of simple transfers of title but also through long-term ground lease arrangements, air rights transactions, and other alternative ownership structures. With the assistance of our tax practitioners in the firm’s business department, we have significant experience in the acquisition and sale of property using tax-deferred, like-kind exchanges. We also work with our business department colleagues on a regular basis to assist clients in indirect acquisitions and sales of property through the assignment of partnership interests, membership interests, and other beneficial ownership interests. Among the transactions that we have worked on in this area are the following:

  • Acquisition of a world headquarters building for a Massachusetts-based defense contractor via a long-term ground lease and design-build arrangement.
  • Acquisition and disposition of multifamily apartment complexes in Massachusetts and surrounding New England states for a regional owner and manager of market rate and mixed income multifamily rental projects.
  • Sale of a Boston office tower located on an air rights parcel including the structuring of related cross-easement arrangements.
