Practice Focus
Mr. Hurley is chairperson of the litigation department as well as a member of the firm’s executive committee. Mr. Hurley concentrates his practice in the area of commercial litigation, with an emphasis on real estate related litigation including land use, environmental, title and title insurance. Mr. Hurley, as part of his litigation practice, advises institutional, commercial and individual clients on a variety of litigation and related issues.
Background
Mr. Hurley joined the firm in l979. He clerked for the Honorable John E. Fenton, Jr. of the Trial Court. Following his clerkship, he served as trial counsel in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General Corp.
Mr. Hurley has tried jury and jury waived cases in Superior Court, Probate Court, Land Court and various District Courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mr. Hurley has tried a number of arbitration claims involving complex construction or insurance matters. Mr. Hurley has tried or argued a number of cases in Federal Courts including a securities fraud jury trial in the U. S. District Court for Massachusetts resulting in a judgment in excess of two million dollars. Mr. Hurley has also argued cases before the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and the Appeals Court of Massachusetts.
Mr. Hurley has frequently lectured on litigation matters for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Foundation, American Land Title Association, Real Estate Bar Association and National Business Institute. He has published written materials on a variety of litigation and real estate topics.
Professional Activities
- Mr. Hurley is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School where he teaches a course in trial evidence. He served as Chairperson of the Massachusetts Trial Court Advisory Committee. He is currently a member of the Town of Milton Zoning Board of Appeals. Mr. Hurley, whose practice has involved a number of cases on Martha's Vineyard, is a trustee of the Vineyard Open Land Foundation.
